Description
Honeybee research. Honeybee (Apis mellifera, centre right) restrained in a tube for an olfactory experiment. The bee is presented with different olfactory stimuli by a device called the 'smell organ' (cone-shaped, centre). The neuronal response of the bee to different smells is recorded and analysed. Scientists at Berlin's Freie University use the bee as a general model to investigate neuronal processing in animals. Honeybees are economically important as pollinators of many of the world's crops. For a close up of the bee in the tube, see image G352/207.
