Description
Hairy cell leukaemia. Light micrograph of a blood smear from a patient with hairy cell leukaemia. This smear shows increased concentration of white blood cells (leucocytes, purple). The cells show characteristic hair-like cytoplasmic projections. Leukemia is a type of cancer in which the blood-producing tissue in bone marrow produces immature white blood cells without restraint, impairing the function of normal blood cells. Hairy cell leukemia is a rare form of leukemia that mostly affects men. Magnification: x800 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
