Description
Gamma-ray burst (GRB), artwork. GRBs are massive short-lived bursts of energy that are hundreds of times brighter than an ordinary supernova. Before light from a gamma-ray burst arrives at Earth, it passes through interstellar gas in its host galaxy (shown in C020/0604), and intergalactic gas between the distant galaxy and us (shown here). This leaves an absorption signature on the light that reveals information about the GRB and the material between us and the distant galaxy. This artwork is based on research by the Gemini Observatory published in 2013.
