Description
19th century water clock. This water clock has a drum (bottom centre) and a bell (upper right), and dates from the end of the 19th century. A water clock is any timekeeping device that operates by the regular flow of water. Here, the mechanism involves a pulley system and blocks labelled with roman numerals, allowing the time to be observed. There are 24 blocks on each side, one for each hour of the day. The upper block currently indicates the eighth hour of the day. It is part of the collection of the Conservatoire National des Arts et Metiers (CNAM) museum, Paris, France.
