Description
Papyrus. An engraving of parts of the papyrus plant, Cyperus papyrus, published in 1790. This plant originated in Syria and tropical Africa, and was introduced into Europe in 1803. It is a reed plant with stout bare stems (centre) and sheath- like leaves. The flowers grow in a mop-like bunch (top right). The plant can grow up to 16 feet high. Its pith was used to produce paper by the ancient Egyptians, and the bullrushes" that sheltered the infant Moses were actually papyrus plants."
