Description
Lung cancer. Light micrograph (LM) of a section through cancerous lung tissue, showing a mixture of small and intermediate-sized cancer cells in a case of small cell carcinoma (SCC). Also known as oat cell carcinoma, this is an aggressive lung cancer that can rapidly spread to other parts of the body, often before diagnosis, and the prognosis is poor. Chemotherapy and radiotherapy help to prolong the life of the patient. Necrosis is usually present ( here at the center of the image). Magnification: x200 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
