Description
Sycamore stem. Light micrograph of a vertical section through a sycamore (Acer pseudoplatanus) stem node. The red layer at the edge of the stem is a protective layer of cork and parenchyma tissue (phellogen), known as the abscission layer, that forms just prior to the leaves dropping in autumn.
