Description
Nuclear power. Nuclear power station containing a fast breeder reactor. A fast breeder reactor differs from normal fission reactors in that it generates more plutonium than it consumes. Each fuel element contains a core enriched with fissile isotopes of uranium and plutonium, surrounded by a blanket of non-fissile uranium-238. During the fission of the core, energy and neutrons are produced. High energy neutrons collide with the uranium-238 in the outer blanket to form fissile plutonium-239. The power station seen here is the Super Phenix commercial-size reactor at Creys- Malville in France, the largest fast breeder reactor in the world.
