Description
Dounreay nuclear power stations, near Thurso, Scotland. Three nuclear power stations are seen here, from left to right: the Dounreay Materials Testing Reactor (DMTR), which closed in 1969; the Dounreay Fast Reactor (DFR), which closed in 1977; and the Prototype Fast Reactor (PFR), which closed in 1994. These nuclear power stations were run by the UK Atomic Energy Authority, and included the UK's first fast breeder reactors. Since the reactors were closed, Dounreay has carried out reprocessing of used nuclear fuel. From April 2005, the site and its reactors have been owned by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority. The initial decommissioning should be complete by 2036, but the site will not be safe to use until 2336.
