Description
Sunspots on the Sun, 1881 and 1887. Sunspots are areas of magnetic activity that are cooler than the rest of the Sun's surface. They range in size from hundreds to thousands of kilometres across. At left are sunspots and a view of the 'rice-grain' structure of the Sun's photosphere, described as 'maximum type'. This image was obtained at Meudon in France, by French astronomer Jules Janssen on 1 June 1881. At right are sunspots and a view of the 'willow-leaf' structure of the Sun's photosphere, described as 'minimum type'. This image was also obtained at Meudon, on 10 June 1887.
