Description
Sheep ked. Polarised light micrograph of the head-end of the body of the parasitic wingless fly called the sheep ked (Melophagus ovinus). The sheep ked is an exo-parasite of sheep, goats and deer. This fly has adapted to its parasitic life by the loss of its wings. It also has a flattened body, piercing, sucking mouthparts, and hook-like claw structures on the ends of its legs for gripping onto skin. The sheep ked can weaken sheep and reduce the value of their skin. Sheep keds spread from sheep to sheep by physical contact. Magnification: x36 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
