Description
Rocket testing control room, test stand number 1, Peenemunde, Germany. At left is German spaceflight society (VfR) veteran Kurt Heinisch (born 1910), who had earlier been involved with amateur rocket development with the VfR (active from 1927 to 1933). The rocket testing ground at Peenemunde was established by the German military in 1937. The most famous of the missiles developed here was the A-4 rocket, better known as the V-2, which was used during World War II. The work carried out at Peenemunde laid the foundations for later work on space flight.
