Description
Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the larva of the plum fruit moth (Grapholita funebrana). This is a common pest attacking plum, gage, damson and occasionally peach. The female lays her eggs at the base of the fruit stalk and the larvae hatch ten days later and immediately enter the fruit and burrow towards the stone. The larvae are 10-12mm long. Caterpillars generally have three pairs of jointed legs behind the head, and a number of fleshy prolegs further along the body. Magnification: x10 when printed at 10cm wide.
