Description
Oil refinery. Crude oil is a mixture of hydrocarbons. These are separated by boiling the crude oil in distillation towers (right). The products of distillation then go through further processes, including purification, cracking, reforming and desulphurisation. The flare tower at left is a way of releasing excess gas from the refinery safely. Photographed at the BP Amoco oil refinery, Whiting, Indiana, USA.
