Description
Nitrogen-fixing plants, Senegal. Seedlings being planted in an arid area in Senegal, near the border with Mauritania. The growth of these plants in these dry conditions is being aided by the addition of the nitrogen-fixing bacteria Rhizobium. Water containing the bacteria is being added to the soil around the roots. The bacteria then colonise the roots, and convert nitrogen in the atmosphere to nutrients for the plant. Such farming methods can increase yields in arid areas, as well as reducing the need to use fertilisers.
