Description
Moss (sporophyte) spore capsule showing the opening through which spores emerge (Tortula ruralis), coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM). Tortula ruralis is known as star moss or twisted in the moss family Pottiaceae. It occurs throughout the world. It grows in many types of climate, including the Arctic, boreal areas, temperate areas, and deserts. It is has been used as a model organism for the study of desiccation tolerance and mechanisms of cellular repair. Magnification: x74 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
