Description
Moss reproductive parts, polarised light micrograph. Longitudinal section through the archegonial cup (female reproductive parts) of a Mnium sp. moss. The male antherozoids swim down the archegonia (blue-black) from the opening to the base. At the base is a ventral canal cell and a large ovum (egg) for fertilisation. Between the archegonia are multi-cellular hairs (paraphyses, red-orange) which fill in the gaps and help retain water to keep the moss moist. Magnification: x100 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
