Description
Liver cells. Light micrograph of a section through the liver. This image shows the centre of one of the many lobules which make up the liver. The liver cells (hepatocytes) are arranged so that blood can easily pass between them. The cells regulate the levels of chemicals in the blood, absorb nutrients and detoxify harmful substances. They also produce some proteins and digestive compounds. At centre left is the lobule's central vein, which takes blood out of the liver via the hepatic vein. Magnification unknown.
