Description
Liana stem. Polarised light micrograph of a transverse section through the stem of a Brazilian liana, or woody vine. At the centre of the stem is the pith, consisting of parenchyma cells. The majority of the stem consists of vascular bundles (yellow). Each bundle contains phloem and xylem cells, which transport carbohydrates and water around the plant respectively. Outside of these is the cortex, which is also made of parenchyma cells. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
