Description
Kidney bean stem. Light micrograph of a section through the stem of a kidney bean (Phaseolus vulgaris) plant. The outer layer is the cuticle (brown), with a cortex of parenchyma (yellow) beneath it. The next layer consists of phloem (dark brown) cells, which transport carbohydrates around the plant. The red layer is xylem cells, which transport water around the plant. At centre are large parenchyma cells (blue) some of which are filled with starch grains (pink), which store energy. Magnification: x14 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
