Description
Fern spore capsule, polarised light micrograph. Transverse section through the frond of a hart's tongue fern (Phyllitis scolopendrium), showing the sporangia (centre). On the underside of the frond is a lens-shaped structure called a sori. This contains numerous stalked sporangia (round), containing reproductive spores. The edge of the sori is made up of thick-walled cells (bright red, green, and yellow), which help to disperse the spores by exploding. Magnification: x45 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
