Description
Dragon tree stem. Polarised light micrograph of a section through a dragon tree stem (Dracaena draco). Vascular bundles (round yellow structures) can be seen containing xylem (larger openings, blue dots) and phloem (smaller openings, yellow) tissues. Xylem transports water and mineral nutrients from the roots throughout the plant, while phloem transports carbohydrates and plant hormones around the plant. Surrounding these are the cortex (blue) and thick-walled woody fibres (black and multicoloured) Magnification: x11 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
