Description
Donald Sharp Fredrickson (1924-2002), US physiologist. Fredrickson studied medicine at the universities of Colorado and Michigan. He spent most of his career at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), working on research on fat metabolism and genetic disorders related to lipids and cholesterol (such as Tangier disease). He carried out this research between 1953 and 1974. His classification of lipoprotein abnormalities was adopted by the World Health Organization in 1972. Here, he is Clinical Director of the National Heart Institute and Head of the Section on Molecular Disease. From 1975 to 1981, he was NIH Director. Photographed in September 1961.
