Description
DNA precipitate. Researcher holding up a test tube with a precipitate (white) of deoxyribonucleic acid (DNA). This is part of the extraction stage in the genetic analysis of a sample. The sample is first ground up to destroy the cells and release the DNA (found in the cell nuclei). Chemicals are then used to isolate the DNA in an aqueous layer. This layer is then placed in a fresh test tube (as seen here) and ethanol (or isopropanol) added to form the white precipitate seen here. This is then dried and analysed. DNA is the genetic material that controls the growth and development of living organisms. Photographed at the Genethon Laboratory in France.
