Description
Cutaway diagram showing the interior of a hurricane. In the centre is the eye, a low-pressure region where wind speeds are relatively calm. It’s about 30 to 50 km across. Surrounding the eye is a ring of thunderstorms called the eyewall. Warm, moist air (red arrow) rises in the centre of the storm, while dry, cool air (blue arrow) sinks. The curved bands of the storm are packed with rain clouds. They can extend hundreds of miles from the eye.
