Description
CERN control room, 1970. Researchers testing the controls for the Intersecting Storage Ring (ISR) collider at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland. The ISR was completed in 1971 and was the world's first proton collider. It stored protons that were accelerated by the proton synchrotron accelerator, and then collided the proton beams at points where its 300- metre-wide rings intersected. Head-on collisions are more efficient at creating new particles. The ISR, the third major construction at CERN and the first of several collider projects, closed in 1984. Many key discoveries in particle physics have been made at CERN, which was founded in 1954.
