Description
A solitary blue wildebeest (Connochaetes taurinus) bull at sunset on the plains near Namutoni rest camp. The wildebeest (or gnu) lives in large herds, sometimes numbering several thousand animals in eastern Africa. The herds are smaller in Etosha National Park where the vegetation is more sparse due to the arid nature of this terrain. It is a herbivore that feeds mainly on grass. During periods of drought the herds gather at watering holes, and when the rains arrive they tend to disperse again. Wildebeest are a major prey species for many of the large predators, including lions and cheetahs. Photographed in Etosha National Park, Namibia.
