Description
Black horse fly. Macrophotograph of the head of a black horse fly (Tabanus atratus). From the family Tabanidae, female horse flies feed on the blood of mammals. They have a painful bite and can be a threat to livestock due to the blood-loss resulting from their feeding. Photographed by the USGS Bee Inventory and Monitoring Lab: an organisation dedicated to identifying, cataloguing and monitoring bees and other insect species.
