Description
The Big European Bubble Chamber (BEBC) at CERN, the European particle physics laboratory outside Geneva. BEBC was typical of the large bubble chambers used in the 1970s to study particles produced at high- energy accelerators. It was a cylinder 3. 7 metres in diameter which, when operational, contained liquid hydrogen at -173 degrees C. The photo shows the various external detectors which completely surround & hide the bubble chamber itself. BEBC operated from 1973 to 1984 & took some 6. 3 million photos of particle interactions. (Photo taken 1977).
