Betel nut user. Young man displaying the red mouth that characterises inveterate betel nut chewers. Betel nuts, from the betel nut palm tree (Arecha catechu), are chewed for their intoxicating effect which is similar to alcohol. Habitual use causes this red discolouration of the mouth, and may cause oral cancers. Photographed in Wewak, the capital of Papua New Guinea's East Sepik Province.
