Description
Joule heating. Steel wool burning after being ignited by contact with a domestic 9-volt battery. As the wool touches both electrodes, a current passes through it. Resistance to the current causes the steel wool to heat, above the temperature at which it burns in air. This is known as joule heating or resistive heating.
