MODEL RELEASED. Banded iron formation in host rock. Geologist holding a rock containing a sulphide facies banded iron formation. Banded iron formations (BIFs) contain alternating layers of a silica mineral and an iron-rich mineral. In sulphide facies BIFs the iron-rich mineral is pyrite and/or pyrrhotite. This specimen shows the original sedimentary globular porosity with a secondary cubic overprint. Photographed at the site of a former copper mine, Macalder, Kenya.
