Description
Arteritis. Coloured angiogram of the left leg of a 53 year old patient who has previously undergone a below-knee amputation in order to treat arteritis. Arteritis is a disease where the walls of arteries become inflamed, usually as a result of infection or auto-immune response. Seen here are severe stenoses (restrictions) of the femoral artery (thin, dark line), a large artery in the thigh. Limited blood flow in the leg can result in necrosis (tissue death) or gangrene. Angiograms use a contrast dye to highlight blood vessels.
