Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of Peridinium sp., marine thecate dinoflagellate. Outer thecal plates, girdle and sulcal grooves. Peridinium sp., marine thecate dinoflagellate. Outer thecal plates, girdle and sulcal grooves. Peridinium is a medium size dinoflagellate. Its body is covered with thecal plates (armoured dinoflagellate). It has two conspicuous groves: sulcus (vertical) and cingulum (horizontal). Peridinium cells may be present in the environment as planktonic cells or thick-walled non-motile cysts usually found in bottom sediments. It is also a freshwater armoured dinoflagellate. Magnification: x460 when shortest axis printed at 25 millimetres.
