Description
Light micrograph of green algae (Haematococcus pluvialis), during their resting phase (cyst phase). These are freshwater algae. Cysts (red) which are formed during the resting phase contain the pigment astaxanthin, an important ingredient in cosmetics. H. pluvialis are commonly found in temperate areas worldwide. Magnification: x400 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
