Description
Amputation instruments, with Petit tourniquet (top right) for reducing blood flow, Liston knives (centre - for rapid cutting of soft tissues around the bone), artery forceps, bone forceps, and bone saw (lower frame). This English set dates from around 1860. Anaesthesia and antiseptic surgical techniques were introduced in the second half of the 19th century. This allowed the development of more refined surgical techniques and reduced infection, and amputation survival rates greatly improved.
