Zinc reacting with a strong acid. The reaction is vigorous, shown by the bubbles of hydrogen gas being generated. Strong acids, such as hydrochloric and sulphuric, are able to dissolve the passivating layer of zinc carbonate that forms when zinc metal reacts with atmospheric carbon dioxide. The reaction of zinc in acid is given by the equation Zn (s) + 2H+ (aq) = Zn2+ (aq) + H2 (g).
