Artist's Description

Yellow mud turtle in its shell. View of a yellow mud turtle (Kinosternon flavescens) hiding in its shell. Yellow mud turtles live in the southern USA, and inhabit muddy lake and pond bottoms, and slow-moving rivers. They often leave the water to bask in the sun, hunt for food or to nest. They eat a variety of foods, including worms, insects and small molluscs. When they are alarmed, they draw their head and legs into their shell for protection, as here. They are also capable of secreting a foul-smelling liquid from glands on the sides of their bodies, which deters predators. Photographed in the Valentine National Wildlife Refuge, Nebraska, USA.
