Artist's Description
Wright Vertical 4 aircraft engine. View of the motor used in 1911 by the Wright brothers in their pioneering aeroplane flights. This is a four-cylinder design with a magneto (ignition mechanism) at lower left. US aviation pioneers Wilbur and Orville Wright produced a series of Wright aircraft models, starting with the first successful flight in a heaver-than-air machine (1903). By 1911, they had produced the Wright Model B aircraft, which used this Wright Vertical 4 engine. This was a liquid-cooled inline piston engine with a power output of 36 horsepower. It was manufactured by the Wright Company and was 63 centimetres long and 35 centimetres wide.
