Artist's Description

World Wide Web by Berners-Lee. Abstract for the March 1989 proposal by British physicist Tim Berners-Lee (born 1955) for the World Wide Web (WWW). At top is the famous annotation 'Vague but exciting...' written by his supervisor Mike Sendall. Between 1989 and 1994, working at CERN (the European particle physics laboratory), Berners-Lee and Robert Cailliau developed the web, a global network for information sharing based on hypertext documents ('hypertext' is mentioned at lower left). In 1994, Berners-Lee founded the Web Consortium W3C, the International Web standards body of which he is the director. He was knighted in 2004.
