Wopmay rock, Mars. False colour image from the Mars exploration rover Opportunity of a rock dubbed the Wopmay rock, found on the lower slopes of Endurance Crater. Scientists believe that this rock, along with other loose rocks which dot the crater floor, may have been formed as a result of the cracking of larger rocks. This could have happened as they dried out after exposure to water. The lumps on Wopmay may be the result of erosion between intersecting cracks. The bluer areas on the rock are rich in iron ore. Photographed on the 7th October 2004.
