Women wipers eating lunch at the roundhouse, Clinton, Iowa, USA in 1943. Wipers were railway workers who cleaned and serviced steam locomotives. The roundhouse was a round structure in which the locomotives were cleaned and repaired. Women worked in numerous traditionally male occupations during World War II, when many men were conscripted.
