Artist's Description
Barium enema X-ray. Elderly female patient undergoing a barium enema X-ray examination. Barium (white) is administered from the enema bag at upper left through a tube into the patient's rectum. Barium, a suspension of barium sulphate, is opaque to the X-rays produced by the X-ray machine at upper right. This procedure enables diseases or abnormalities of the large intestine (colon) to be detected.
