Artist's Description

Winds diagram, artwork published in Specula Physico-Mathematico-Historica (1696), an encyclopedia of science by the German monk and author Johann Zahn (1641-1707). The text is in Latin and French, and the various compass points are marked on the compass rose. The circles give various wind-related information according to the prevailing wind directions, including a circle of named winds (including sirocco, tramontana, levant, ponent, maestro). The outermost circle gives details of the location and effects of the winds. North is at bottom, and West at right.
