Description
William Osler as a pathologist, 1880s. Canadian physician William Osler (1849-1919) performing an autopsy at the Blockley Mortuary in Philadelphia, USA, in the period 1886 to 1889. Osler began his career at McGill University, Montreal, Canada. He was Chair of Clinical Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania from 1884 to 1889, then the first professor of medicine (1889) at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, USA. In 1905 he became a professor at Oxford University, UK. Considered the father of modern medicine, he contributed towards reforms of medical education, founding the practice of student residency in hospitals.
