Description
Sir William Howard Russell (1821-1907), an Irish-born journalist regarded as the father of war reporting. As the first fully accredited war correspondent his exposure in the London Times newspaper of the mismanagement of the Crimean War of 1854-6 and the thousands of British soldiers suffering from cholera and malaria led to a public outcry and forced the government to introduce reforms of military medical services. His reports influenced Florence Nightingale who after persuading the government into taking action took a party of 38 nurses to the Crimea to organise care for wounded soldiers and to combat disease and the insanitary conditions.
