Description
William Brown Cogswell (1834-1921), US industrialist and chemical engineer. Cogswell studied civil engineering at Rensselaer but left in 1852 without graduating. In 1881, he founded the Solvay Process Company, forming the basis of alkali manufacturing industry in the USA. The Solvay Process is used to produce sodium carbonate from brine and limestone. This brought Cogswell great wealth and he donated money to many charities in the Syracuse area, New York, USA. A tablet recognising his benefactions was placed in the Hospital of the Good Shepherd, a former site of what is now SUNY Upstate Medical University, New York, USA.
