Artist's Description
Home planet. View of the Earth from space, taken from the Apollo 16 spacecraft as it made its way to the Moon. The image is centered on California, part of North America being visible between the thick clouds. An extensive cover of ice near the North Pole is visible at top right. Apollo 16 was launched on 16 April 1972, crewed by John Young, Charles Duke and Tom Mattingly. Young and Duke stayed on the Moon for 71 hours, including three excursions totalling 20 hours. Mattingly remained in lunar orbit. After leaving the Moon, Young and Duke rejoined Mattingly for the journey home. Apollo re-entered on 27 April 1972.
