Description
Watt steam engine, 18th century. Illustration of a vertical section through the condenser mechanism in a Watt steam engine. Scottish engineer and inventor James Watt (1736-1819) made key improvements to the existing Newcomen steam engine. Watt's version (1765) caused the steam to condense in a separate chamber (condenser) apart from the piston. This helped to maintain the temperature of the cylinder at that of the injected steam. Artwork from 'Chaudieres et Machines a Vapeur' (1911) by French civil engineer Max de Nansouty (1854-1913), part of the 'Les merveilles de la science' series of 1867-1891 by Louis Figuier.
