Description
MODEL RELEASED. Water purification research. Chemical engineer Chedly Tizaoui using a laptop computer to study the organic pollutant-destroying effect of ozone beads (in dish at centre left). The beads are put in a column to treat waste water or industrial effluent passed through it. Each of the 2 millimetre-diameter silica beads has ozone, a highly reactive form of oxygen, adsorbed on its surface. This technique is ten times more potent than pumping ozone through waste water, where lit- tle of the ozone dissolves and attacks the pollut- ion. Once the ozone is used up, the beads must be recharged. Tizaoui heads the team from Bradford University, UK, that developed the process.
